MEET JIAN SHEN, MD, PhD

A fellowship-trained, board-certified spine surgeon, Dr. Jian Shen is a world-renowned leader in endoscopic spine surgery and disc regeneration.

 

Dr. Shen has extensive experience in treating a full spectrum of spine conditions, and has performed over 5,000 minimally invasive spine surgeries, including more to 4,000 endoscopic surgeries of the lumbar, cervical, and thoracic spine. In fact, Dr. Shen has performed more endoscopic spine surgeries than any other neurosurgeon in the Western Hemisphere. As recognition of his skill, Dr. Shen won the Parviz Kambin Award in 2019, the most prestigious award there is in endoscopic spine surgery.

Dr. Shen earned his MD and PhD degrees from Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York, completed orthopedic surgery residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina, and completed fellowship training in both orthopedic and neurosurgical spine surgery at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center.

 

Dr. Shen is a founding member of the International Society of Endoscopic Spine Surgery (ISESS), a member of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (SMISS), the Minimally Invasive Neurosurgical Society (MINS), the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery (ISASS), and the North American Spine Society (NASS).

Dr. Shen is very active in teaching endoscopic surgery and clinical research. He was a visiting professor at Medical University of South Carolina and Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He has presented papers at multiple international meetings including the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and Techniques (WCMISST), SMISS Annual Meeting in 2012 through 2019, Minimally Invasive Neurosurgical Society (MINS) Annual Meeting in 2013 through 2018, as well as the ISASS Annual Meeting in 2015 through 2017.
